BN 3.0 Channel Concepts

bN 3.0 will allow user defined channels with different rules.

Initially we'll having voting and activate a small number of channels at a time (to avoid overwhelming everyone) although over time we'd like to make this more flexible.

Different Posting Rules

I imagine each channel will have some kind of legend showing which rules apply to it. This way we can have more high-brow channels for serious discussion and leave other channels for the more typical bN feel.

I think it'd look something like the HBO screen before movies that tells you what to expect.

  • NSFW / SFW
  • Images Allowed / No images
  • Youtube (and maybe others) Embeds Allowed / No Embedding
  • Sources Required (you'd have to source your assertions on request or be voted down)
  • No Ad Hominem attacks (It can be fun to attack other users, but perhaps we could focus on the topic in some threads)

  • We might need some system where downvotes can either count against the channel or the whole site. It's probably not fair to completely stfu someone who doesn't read the posting rules on a channel they subscribed to.

Different Promotion Strategies

  • Breaking news - We could have a breaking news channel where stories are only accepted from a handful of known, respectable news sites but where stories get promoted with 5 votes and no waiting period

User Restrictions

  • Is it fair to let the administrator of a channel block users from participating. If a channel admin gets too powerhungry then any disaffected users can form a competing channel

Queue Submission & Voting Rules

  • Should we let people run a channel where they either submit or have the final say on all content. For a serious topical debate channel this might be a good way to keep the quality high

Debate Threads

I'd love to build a debate thread model where users could sign up for the thread when it was in the queue. When the thread goes live, we'll break those users into for and against camps and they'll have to argue the assigned side of the argument for the first 45 minutes. Only registered participants will be able to post for the first 45.

After 45 minutes, the AI will step in and declare a winner based on which side has the most cool votes, then the discussion will open up to anyone.
