Executive Summary
bannination.com (bN) is an internet-based discussion forum which uses community-based moderation. differing interpretations of the appropriate use of this feature, combined with a diverse array of community standards, often lead to friction between various factions on the forum. the chaka/snoops protection racket exists to mitigate the negative effects of this friction, primarily by preventing illegitimate downvoting ("nancying") of certain viewpoints.
Background
bN is essentially split into three factions.
1. the EVENING crew is notably laissez-faire, not inclined to flaunt their intellect, and generally seeks an outlet for humorous, no-holds-barred discussion and argument. the evening crew's viewpoint stresses the "ban" in bannination, arguing that this site should be the last refuge of scoundrels, a hive of scum and villainy; the place you come to when you've been banned from everywhere else.
2. the MORNING crew is looking for a place to have "mature," "reasonable" discussion on the internets, and will excommunicate anyone not meeting their standard of "reasonable" or "mature." in theory, they're mostly ex-FARK users who are here due to that site's excessive moderation policies. in practice, many of them still support the site through paid membership in totalFARK accounts, and are thus fairly used to abiding within FARK's strict ruleset.
3. the MAJORITY doesn't give a fuck either way, and wishes #1 and #2 would stop fagging up the threads. they may occasional intervene when the morning crew downvotes legit posts, or when the evening crew drops non-worksafe images into worksafe threads during standard business hours.
Friction
During the first half of the workday, the morning crew essentially owns the site. Threads submitted during this period veer towards serious topics. Money, Politics, Home Improvement; these sorts of things. Likewise, in the wee hours of the morning, the evening crew runs things. Serious topics exist, but are often dwarfed by giant "trainwreck" threads that exist strictly for LULZ (a corruption of LOL, which stands for loads of laughter).
Between when the evening crew wakes up (around noon) and when the morning crew goes to bed (around 11pm) there is a significant amount of friction between the two groups. Typically this friction takes the form of simple insults. Typical ad-homs question the other poster's intelligence or heterosexuality, or simply imply that by posting on bN they must have "no life." However, on infrequent occasions things take a more sinister turn.
It only takes three "downvotes" to zap a post on bN. As of late, members of the morning crew have taken to organizing mass downvotes of the evening crew's posts. These have included posts which go against the TOS (non-worksafe images in worksafe threads), posts which are in a gray area (such as eastheimer's endless RON PAUL spam), as well as posts which fall completely in the realm of acceptability (such as "hey, you guys are a bunch of fuckin nancies").
Protection Racket
The chaka/snoops protection racket consists of two seperate initiatives designed to safeguard the postings of the evening crew from the abuses of the morning crew. Pre-emptive measures include upvoting certain users' posts, in anticipation of later downvoting. Responsive measures largely consist of mobilizing upvoters into threads where legit posts are threatened.
Rapid Response Team (RRT)
The RRT mobilizes to upvote posts which are currently at -1 or -2. To summon the RRT, paste a link to the thread along with a quote from the threatened post in as many other threads as you feel. Generally this should include the "top thread" of the moment, as well as the beer garden and strip club (if it's open).
Duties of the RRT are twofold:
1.) Enter the thread in question and upvote the threatened posts.
2.) Return to all postings summoning the RRT and pre-emptively upvote those, as well.
Protective Action To Safeguard Your Shit (PATSYS)
bN PATSYS pre-emptively upvote all posts from users on the "endangered users list," which is maintained at the top of this wiki post. This practice was pioneered by snoops and chaka khan (an eastheimer alt) as a way of protecting each other from the abuses of the morning crew. other users who feel threatened may add their profiles to this wiki post to receive the same protection.
fuckyou recently suffered a stroke and is suffering a mild case of Russianese. As this is insulting to the liberal agenda held by the morning crew he is being zapped. Therefore fuckyou is on temporary PATSYS alert until his health improves.
