IRC Chat
From Voice of the Proletariat
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message commands and data transfers.
[edit] IN CASE THE CHAT-LINK ON MAINPAGE IS BROKEN
*Calm down and count to ten *Try again to make sure it's really broken *If you know anything about IRC, try other clients *Leave a note in Beer Garden *Send e-mail to wepsi (the address is her username @ username again followed by .com)
Sometimes the servers are just not connected to eachother and appear broken. Trying other servers might help (see the list below), or reconnecting several times till it works. The Java-chat client is programmed to connect to a roundrobin, meaning it randomly chooses a server from a list when user connects. The client does not know when a server is down, so it might try to connect to it anyway.
[edit] Clarification
IRC is not maintained or supported by Banned Ventures LLC. The chat link at the top of every page is there as a courtesy to Bannination.com users who would be interested in going someplace to chat with other folks who also use the site. As a result, the rules to use the IRC server may vary and policies on the site are not always observable policies in the chatroom. Grahams and CrankyBastard may sometimes visit the IRC channel and talk with folks, but they do not control or influence what goes on in the #bannination chatroom.
[edit] Connecting
There are a number of ways to get to the IRC.
- Browser Embedded Java IRC Client (This is just for getting to the banniNation chat, not anywhere else)
- Any IRC client using Channel:#bannination Server:irc.fdfnet.net Port:6667
Other possible servers include
* bethere.fdfnet.net (Port: 6667) * ibusy.fdfnet.net (Ports: 6667, 9999) * microtosh.fdfnet.net (Port: 6667) * viper.fdfnet.net (Port: 6667)
[edit] What else do you need to know
- Typing "/nick newname" will change your name in IRC (it can be pretty much anything you want, using letters, numbers and the following characters _ ' |(){} [] )
- The +v means you are better than a regular user.
- @ before the name means the person is an op ("mod"), but don't worry, those powers aren't used very often (but some use them more often than others, and for more personal reasons).
- Abusive behaviour and spamming will result in a show of power.
- The ops currently are Heap, Howie_feltersnatch, Kitsune, LudditeMike, MTechnik, Notsuebhoney, Wepsi and wushupork.
- The rules in the chat are pretty much the same elsewhere in banniNation.
- Our Chat Terms of Service.
- The IRC-network however might have a say in some things related to the users and chatting.
- If you have a problem with how someone acts, whether it is a regular user or an op, contact an op. It's their job to help.
- Just because someone's name is shown in the list, doesn't mean the person is actively chatting.
- If the place is quiet, just wait a bit, someone will show up.
- The most active times are the mornings and evenings (US time)- and when the server dies...
- Banned Ventures LLC has no influence or control whatsoever over the channel, it's just bunch of users having fun.
- People claim the IRC gang is behind all drama in Bannination. This is false. We generate 1/4 by ourselves and the rest is just brought in by others.
[edit] Rules set by the Administrators of the IRC Network
These are some of the ground rules set by the people who run the IRC Network. These rules are not flexible and if you habitually violate any of them, it may result in their decision to ban your IP address from the network entirely. If this ends up happening, it is outside of the actions of those who run the #bannination IRC channel and thus... there would be nothing anyone in the channel can do about it.
Some of the basic rules are:
* No proxy connections (including TOR) * No spoofing (pretending to be someone else) * No mass messaging (flooding, harassment, spam) * No ban evasion (attempting to rejoin a channel after banned through proxies or spoofing, attempting to avoid a Global Ban on an IP by using a proxy) * No spybots (Link lookers, proxy loggers, etc) * No advertising (spam) * No whining (Please, the admins are letting us use their home. We are their guests. Please respect the services they provide free of charge)
[edit] Protecting Your Nickname and Registering with Nickserv
- Nickname registration in the Bannination channel is strongly recommended, although optional.
- To register your nickname:
* Make sure that you're currently on the nickname you want registered, * At any prompt, type: /msg nickserv register achosenpassword * Once registered, type: /msg nickserv identify thechosenpassword
- For further security, you may consider forcing identification on your registered nickname, so others won't be able to use it. To do this, type: /msg nickserv set identify on - You can only set identify on after you have used the REGISTER and IDENTIFY commands above.
- This will force a setting on your nickname that when you connect, you must identify (prove who you are) otherwise the nickname will be changed after 2 minutes to Guest##### to prevent nickname impersonation.
- You only need to REGISTER and SET IDENTIFY once. When you connect, if you have SET IDENTIFY turned on, you will need to type /msg nickserv identify yourchosenpassword in order to retain the use of your nickname for that session.
- Registering a nickname on IRC that is NOT YOURS on Bannination.com is a BANNABLE offense and will be punished swiftly. This may include IRC Admin actions to ban your IP address from the network.
- It is generally appreciated that people use the same names in IRC that they use on the Bannination.com web site. There are no rules against using a different name in IRC chat... as long as it is not another user's name on the site.
- Users who do not have their nickname registered with Nickserv will not be added to the channel bot for auto-voice.
- If you have any questions, feel free to ask any of the operators in #bannination for help.
[edit] Getting Help
The best way would be using the chat-link above. Banninistas MTechnik, notsuebhoney and wepsi are glad to help. They also can answer any question you have about #bannination and IRC. Network related help, such as questions on services, can be had in #help.
