[edit] Silly Submitter Flag
- Submitted By: Unknown
- Submitted On: Around August 1st (First Comment)
Description
When we get an influx of new users from sites that don't have headline voting, we seem to inspire a wave of pranksters submitting misleading headlines just to see if people will be gullible enough to vote them up.
As a countermeasure, there could be a small button somewhere on the thread page that allows you to flag someone as "silly submitter" (or whatever label). When a thread exceeds some undisclosed threshold of silly submitter votes, the user is flagged--probably a flag that they can see in their own profile, and which decays over time.
As long as the flag is active, anything they submit to the queue will have a small note by the link that says "silly submitter" (without outing them), so that people know not to vote that shit up again.
Alternatively they could just have submission privileges rescinded, or be STFU'd according to the number of silly submitter votes, but this seems like the most gentle approach.
Comments
- I don't know - I think the occasional "silly seasons" that occur after waves of new users join are just a fact of life. I might be persuaded to support some kind of "new user 'training-wheels' mode," but I'd tend to err on the side of leniency and just ride out the silly seasons. As the banniNation grows larger, I would hope that we could collectively educate new citizens and survive a few episodes of "ZOMG! Newbs are running amok!" without undue hassles. Mainly, I would like to see us stay true to my personal interpretation of our vision (shamelessly stolen from the Statue of Liberty) - "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" But, that's just me. Cranky bastard 23:35, 1 August 2007 (PDT)
- Bear in mind, this suggestion was in response to grahams finally asking "do we have to vote EVERY one of these up?" in one of these threads. It was intended to help credulous and horny queue voters not get fooled quite so often. It has nothing to do with turning away immigrants or new users...(??? where did that comparison even come from?) --Vin diesel 02:52, 2 August 2007 (PDT)
- Hang on - are you saying the "silly submitters" the regulars on the site or the new people? I read this suggestion as some kind of effort to slap a "N00B!" sticker on new arrivals - hence the Statue of Liberty quote. Maybe I'm looking at the suggestion backwards. Anyway, I think this sort of thing sorts itself out pretty quickly on its own. Cranky Bastard 09:58, 2 August 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Cumulative STFU Index
- Submitted by: Unknown.
- Submitted on: Unknown.
Description
Add a hidden counter to everyone's account, and default it to a value of 1. Every time a person gets a STFU Index high enough to disable comments, increment the counter. Then, do one of two things:
- Whenever they get a post zapped, increase their STFU index by the counter's value, multiplied by the normal amount the STFU index gets increased.
- Slow down their STFU Index's decay rate by the counter's value.

[edit] STFU Multiplication Metric
- Submitted by: Ratfucker
- Submitted on: Around July 19th.
Description
Starts at 1. Does not drop below. Goes up +1 every time the person reaches STFU of 2.0 (meaning a full timeout), decays over 4 months.
When someone gets STFU'ed, they'll build up a STFU MM higher than 1, so the result is that their normal STFU score is multiplied by the other metric thus resulting in a timeout quicker than usual if they continue to misbehave after having one timeout until the MultiMetric decays back to normal. Would be "combined" and affect alt accounts like the other metrices do. When it decays and ends up as 1, the STFU scores are calculated as normal as X multiplied by 1 is still X.
Comments
- I'd modify it to decay by, say, .2/week or something like that. MuninsFire 15:28, 19 July 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Cool Score
- Submitted by: Unknown
- Submitted on: Unknown
Description
The cool score should not only be the total of cool votes, but should subtract from that number the amount of not cool votes (such as for comments zapped).
Comments
The CCS now only looks at cool votes within the past two weeks, by the way. This puts everyone on a more level playing field. Cranky bastard 13:59, 23 July 2007 (PDT)
- The reason I did not include downvotes in the CCS is because I'm not sure "cool" and "inappropriate" votes are symmetric operations. (I'm almost sure I've typed this in here before, but recent overhauls of the suggestion pages may have eaten that.) Based on the number of other suggestions and discussions about the differences between "not cool" and "inappropriate," my concern still stands. Of course, "cool" can sometimes mean "not inappropriate, neener, neener!" so the asymmetry obviously cuts both ways. At this point, the CCS is only really relevant (if at all) for people who do not draw a lot (any?) of 'inappropriate' votes. Note: the CCS is the sum of positive comment scores over the last two weeks, not 'the total of cool votes' as described in the suggestion description entry above. If a user's comments are voted up and down and up and down in a pissing match, the CCS is only involved if the final scores on the comments involved are greater than zero. In other words, the CCS looks at the end result of voting on comments, not the blow-by-blow up/down votes used to get there. Cranky bastard 23:36, 5 August 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Metastasis Index
- Submitted by: MuninsFire
- Submitted on: Around July 10th.
Description
Your number of known alts.
- Conditional on a 30-minute delay in updating the number, and a strict policy of only having a single number--viz. "Known Alts: 1" --MuninsFire
Comments
- Really, this shouldn't be all that controversial. It's not displaying the alts, just a number. Perhaps it will encourage people to keep the number at zero.--Swami-on-rye 20:55, 10 July 2007 (PDT)
- Tom says: "That alt post couldn't have been mine: look, I have zero known alts" (because he has used a fresh IP address...)
- Dick says: "That alt post MUST have been yours, GuyIHate, because look, your known-alt number went up exactly (half an hour after) the post was made!"
- Harry says: "HEY, look at Sue, she has three known alts! Obviously her opinion is therefore worthless, because who needs three alts?"
- User:Leperflesh says: Screw Tom, Dick, and Harry. We don't need this feature, it only escalates the arms war.

[edit] Nancy Metric
- Submitted by: Unknown
- Submitted on: Around July 10th.
Description
Modify to also affect the number of times you downvote items in the queue that get popped to the front page.
Comments
- Keep the Nancy Metric pure -- it measures one thing. Also, let's not put a metric on queue item downvoting. Having lots of Pillowbytes is punitive. The democratic process of voting down things in the queue you don't like should not be penalized this way.--Swami-on-rye 20:58, 10 July 2007 (PDT)
- Yeah... I guess. Elchip 06:54, 11 July 2007 (PDT)
- Downvoting threads in the queue that you don't want on the mainpage is part of the democratic process; downvoting comments in a thread is like watching "Friends" whilst whining about how bad of an actor David Schwimmer is.
