What are those Tag boxes?
You may have noticed tag boxes have started to appear at the top of all the comment pages. This is the start of our content-classification system which will allow users to tag stories in whatever categories they see fit.
How do I use them?
First you'll need a browser that supports AJAX. We're testing right now in Firefox and IE6. Opera also works. I have no idea if Safari or Konqueror support them.
Essentially you just enter any short textual phrases that describe the story. Whenever two or more users enter the same tag, that tag will get added to the story (it sometimes take a few minutes to update)
What makes a good tag?
* A piece of text up to 20 characters long * No punctuation or HTML * Keep the profanity down - these will be used on the SFW side too * It can describe the subject matter ie "France", "Boobies" or "Bush" * It can describe the source "BBC", "Fox News" * It can characterize the discussion "flamewar", "argument"

- Why can't I see my tag?
It's likely that no user has seconded your tag so it's not been made public
- What can I do with these tags?
Nothing yet!
Soon you'll be able to set your interests and dislikes using the built up tag library. That will in turn adjust the queue into something more organic and suited to your interests.
- So why enter tags now?
All the cool kids are doing it. Also it'll help us build up a decent library of tags for testing.
- Why not just have 16 fixed tags, I've already gimped them up?
Any fixed set of tags would serve to pigeonhole the site, lets not do that just yet!
- Isn't this just like the tag system on slashdot?
Sort of, but this will be a core feature of the site and allow you to easily avoid stories that don't interest you. Not some ancillary way to find related stories. Perhaps in time you'll be able to get an email whenever there is a good abortion flamewar in progress!
- Does this replace SFW/NSFW/Discussion?
No! NSFW and Discussion are more like hard categories than tags. We'll provide separate ways to completely strip them from your front page.
- Some assclown tagged a story "vagoo", what's a vagoo?
I'm not going to explain that, but if you think a tag is inappropriate then you can negate it by typing "-vagoo" in the tag box.
