[edit] New Metric for cool points
- Submitted By: Klum
- Submitted On: 5:29, 11 August 2007 (EST)
Description
Set up a new metric for 'cool points accumulated this month'. Reset it to 0 on the 1st of every month.
Comments
- The current Cool Metric works on a 2 week basis. The number indicates the number of posts of yours that have a score of higher than 0 in the last two weeks. For all intents and purposes, it pretty much is the same thing, just not for the entire month. Ratfucker 22:17, 11 August 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Search
- Submitted By: Meta
- Submitted On: 14:24, 30 July 2007 (PDT)
Description
Simple keyword search of the headlines for the last N months. Often I see a dupe, but going through the history a page at a time to find it is really tedious. (I can't believe this hasn't been suggested before.) --Meta 14:24, 30 July 2007 (PDT)
Comments
- Here's an idea from a lateral thinker - how hard would it be to make the wiki's search function include banniNation site content in addition to the regular wiki content? Any wiki-code experts around here? Cranky bastard 15:57, 30 July 2007 (PDT)
- Unfortunately search is expensive, even with a Mysql full text index. Searching headlines would be fine, but searching a quarter million comments is never going to be viable without a dedicated machine Grahams 22:40, 30 July 2007 (PDT)
- Whabbout checking submitted links against the list of previously submitted links, and notifying (if not autorejecting) on a URL dupe? (I realize this doesn't help for different URLs on the same subject.) Also, meta, if you have to look back months to find the old link and call it a dupe, why not let it go? I can understand saying "this link was posted a few days ago" but if it's months ago, and it's getting votes because enough people in the queue apparently missed it the first time, don't be a dupe nazi! --Vin diesel 01:44, 31 July 2007 (PDT)
- Would just have a URL checker. It wouldn't catch same-stories-on-a-different-site dupes, but it would eliminate the dupes from the exact same URL. Ratfucker 20:52, 31 July 2007 (PDT)
- Realised there was no vote box for this, or does it not really matter?
- Probably don't need to vote on this one... it's done and on the Report Dupe Page Grahams 21:34, 8 August 2007 (PDT)

[edit] Archive Old Threads
- Submitted by: Ratfucker
- Submitted on: Unknown.
Description
- After 2 weeks, no posts and no votes.
Comments
- With a few exceptions, i.e. such as the Never Ending Story thread. --Chippey 17:58, 9 July 2007 (PDT)
- I would expect exceptions would be able to be made by Grahams for special threads, like the Beer Garden, Tequila Bar and the Never Ending Story Threads. Ratfucker 18:22, 9 July 2007 (PDT)
- I'd say sooner than that... maybe once it drops off the main page.
- If i'm going to keep the never ending story thread alive then it'll have to be like the Beer Garden and drop older posts. As it is it's crippling the database each time it has to be built. Grahams 14:31, 10 July 2007 (PDT)
- Maybe you could make a special case for that thread where old, dropped posts are added to a static html page, which is linked at the top of the thread?--Vin diesel 19:14, 10 July 2007 (PDT)
- Or even multiple pages and just trim and build at like 200 posts a page. brazil 18:44, 11 July 2007 (PDT)
- One week seems fair enough to me. Ratfucker 01:46, 11 July 2007 (PDT)
- What is the foundational argument for archiving/closing old threads? Is it to reduce database overhead, or eliminate old-thread-spamming, or what?--Leperflesh 13:56, 18 July 2007 (PDT)
- Main argument is that it keeps people from trying to fuck with other's posts in older threads. (Even though it wouldn't affect the metrics, it still leaves old posts and threads open to be screwed with) It would also keep advertising spambots from finding postable forms in google and spamming us with ads. I imagine DB use would also be reduced as archive threads (with no voting or posting abilities) would be a static page and not need to be recreated from the DB upon changes. Ratfucker 14:47, 19 July 2007 (PDT)
- In that case... why not go with "distance from the top of the main page" instead of "age" as the criteria for archiving? Since articles get re-sorted back to the top when they have posting traffic, any article still getting traffic a long time after it started (such as the beer garden, neverending story, or whatever) would remain open; but threads nobody is posting in any more would get archived. --Leperflesh 16:04, 19 July 2007 (PDT)
- Votes cast against comments that are over two weeks old are now ignored. Cranky bastard 10:00, 27 July 2007 (PDT)
