He's an enigma, wrapped inside a question,..or is he?

I'm a redneck, actually. I grew up drinking from mud puddles and skinny-dipping in irrigation canals in rural Oregon. I'm well versed in life on small farms, I know how to trim horse hooves and keep cow udders clean and how long it takes eggs to go bad in the nest in summer. I am proficient in the ancient martial arts of back hoe.

From 17 to 33 years of age, I worked in construction.

In 1994 my overgrown sense of indignation lead me to testing for a volunteer deputy position at the local Sheriff's Office, and they took me. 23 months later I was offered a full time position and I stayed with the department until 2003. I had specialized training in Community Policing under the US Department of Justice COPS Office, and had been funded as a resident deputy in a very small community. I wrote the community policing program for my agency and it was used to secure grants for an additional 10 COP positions.

Then we got a new Sheriff. He "didn't believe" in grants or community policing, and the program was scrubbed. My overgrown sense of indignation lead me to leave the Sheriff's Office.

In 2004 I was asked by the US Department of Justice ICITAP office to go to Kosovo to teach community policing to the new, national Kosovo Police Services School in Vushtrri, Kosovo. There is too much to write about the experience to do it justice here. In short, I'm a big, gay fanboy of Kosovo and I think we are wise to help there. My only regret from the experience is that we here in the US fail our own democracy in such elitist ways. This country was never intended as a drive through service, we have to work at this.

After 2 years I am now back at home, and working in construction again. I'm still involved in politics here in the county and there are those that have asked me to run for Sheriff, based upon my philosophies of decentralization and pushing resource management out to the public. We'll see how that goes, small town politics isn't as much fun as it sounds.
